    3. Clock in and out for each day — Use the time inputs to enter when you started and finished work each day (Mon–Sun).
    4. Review your weekly summary — Regular hours, overtime hours, and total pay are calculated automatically.
    5. Print or reset — Print the timesheet for your records or reset to start a new week.

    Understanding Overtime Calculations

    What is Overtime?

Overtime refers to hours worked beyond the standard workday threshold. In most jurisdictions, overtime must be compensated at a higher rate than regular hours, typically 1.5 times the normal hourly rate.

    Daily vs. Weekly Overtime

This calculator uses daily overtime — any hours beyond the daily threshold count as overtime. Some regions also have weekly overtime (e.g., over 40 hours/week). Check your local laws for applicable rules.

    Overtime Pay Formula

    Overtime Pay = OT Hours × Rate × 1.5

    For a $20/hr rate with 3 overtime hours: 3 × $20 × 1.5 = $90 in overtime pay.

    Common Use Cases

    Hourly Employee Payroll

Track daily clock-in and clock-out times to calculate weekly pay with overtime for hourly workers.

    Freelancer Time Tracking

Log hours worked each day for client billing, with clear regular and overtime breakdowns.

    Shift Workers

Track variable shift schedules including overnight shifts that cross midnight.

    Part-Time Workers

Calculate hours for part-time schedules by leaving non-working days blank.

    Overtime Verification

Verify that your paycheck correctly reflects the overtime hours you worked during a pay period.

    Project Time Tracking

Track hours spent on a specific project throughout the week for accurate billing and reporting.

    Timesheet Best Practices

    Record Daily

Enter your times at the end of each workday. Relying on memory at the end of the week leads to inaccuracies and lost hours.

    Be Precise

Use exact clock-in and clock-out times rather than rounding. Even 15 minutes of rounding per day adds up to over an hour per week.

    Include Breaks

If your employer deducts break time, clock out for lunch and clock back in. Unpaid breaks should not be included in your total hours.

    Keep Records

Print or save your weekly timesheets. Having a personal record protects you in case of payroll disputes.

    Overtime Laws Overview

    United States (FLSA)

    1.5x after 40 hours/week. Some states have daily OT (e.g., California: 1.5x after 8h/day, 2x after 12h/day).

    European Union

Maximum 48 hours/week average. Overtime rates vary by country — many require extra pay but rate is not federally mandated.

    United Kingdom

No statutory overtime rate, but most contracts specify 1.5x. Workers can opt out of the 48-hour maximum.

    Australia

1.5x for first 2 hours, 2x after that. Penalty rates also apply for weekends and holidays.

    Canada

Varies by province. Most provinces require 1.5x after 44 or 48 hours/week. Some have daily OT.

    India

Overtime is typically 2x the regular rate after 9 hours/day or 48 hours/week under the Factories Act.
