What is a stereo panner test?

The StereoPannerNode in the Web Audio API allows us to send audio exclusively to the left or right channel. A value of -1 sends all audio to the left, +1 to the right, and 0 sends equally to both.

Why can't I hear anything from one speaker?

Possible causes include a disconnected speaker, a hardware issue, incorrect audio balance settings in your OS, or a loose connection. Check your system's sound settings to ensure the balance is centered.

What does the frequency sweep do?

The frequency sweep plays a tone that gradually increases from low (100Hz) to high (10,000Hz) frequencies, testing your speakers across the full audible range. If certain frequencies are missing or distorted, it may indicate a speaker issue.

What frequency is used for the channel test?

The default channel test uses a 440Hz sine wave (the musical note A4), which is a clear, easy-to-identify tone that works well for testing both low and high frequency speaker drivers.

Does this work with headphones?

Yes, this tool works with headphones as well. In fact, testing with headphones is a great way to verify that both the left and right audio channels are being output correctly from your device.

What is the waveform display showing?

The waveform display shows the real-time audio signal using an AnalyserNode from the Web Audio API. It visualizes the amplitude of the sound wave over time, confirming that audio is being generated correctly.

Can I change the test frequency?

The tool provides preset buttons for different tests. The channel test uses 440Hz and the sweep covers 100Hz to 10kHz. These are chosen to comprehensively test speaker performance.

Is this tool safe for my speakers?

Yes, the tool plays at a moderate volume level (0.3 gain) to protect your hearing and speakers. You can increase your device volume for better audibility, but the tool itself does not produce dangerously loud output.

Why does the waveform not show anything?

Make sure you have started a test by clicking one of the buttons. If the waveform is still flat, check that your browser has permission to play audio and that your system volume is not muted.
