    Compound Interest Formula Explained

    The Formula

    A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt)

    Where A is the future value, P is the principal, r is the annual interest rate (decimal), n is the number of compounding periods per year, and t is the time in years.

    Compounding Frequency

    More frequent compounding yields higher returns. Annual (n=1), Semi-annual (n=2), Quarterly (n=4), Monthly (n=12), Daily (n=365). The difference between monthly and daily is usually very small.

    Time is the most powerful factor in compound interest. $10,000 at 8% for 10 years grows to $21,589. For 20 years: $46,610. For 30 years: $100,627. Each additional decade more than doubles your money.

    Rule of 72

    Divide 72 by your interest rate to estimate doubling time. At 6%: 72/6 = 12 years to double. At 9%: 8 years. At 12%: 6 years. This quick mental math helps you compare investment options.
